HomeMy WebLinkAboutDog Park Closure Update - 8/24/2023Dog Park Closure Update In April, the Board of Trustees approved the expenditures for a new dog park near the Disc Golf Course parking lot at Central Park. The park is now complete and open for use! The park is 2.5 acres and includes a space for small dogs and large dogs, shade structures, and play amenities for the dogs. With this update, the Town of Firestone will close the old dog parks to comply with the State of Coloradoʼs stormwater permit. The closure dates are as follows: On Friday, August 25 the Aisiks Dog Park will be permanently closed. On Friday, September 1 the dog park in Settlers Park will be permanently closed. More Information Earlier this year, the Town of Firestone began a Dog Park relocation project for the dog park located in Settlers Park and the Aisiks Dog Park. Both parks are located in detention ponds and must be closed due to the Town of Firestoneʼs stormwater permit issued by the State of Colorado that requires the Town to identify sources of stormwater pollution that may discharge from our storm sewer system into local rivers and streams. Pet waste is one pollutant source containing high levels of bacteria that can impair our local waterways, making them unsafe for fishing and recreation. The Town heard from many residents about the concern of closing the dog parks, with no solidified plans to relocate them. As directed by the Board of Trustees, Town Sta worked closely with a group of passionate dog owners who participated in developing a plan for the new dog park to be built at Central Park before the two parks were closed. The Town of Firestone is grateful for this resident engagement and enjoyed working together to find a solution. Whatʼs Next? This fall, the Town of Firestone will schedule additional neighborhood meetings to discuss other potential spaces for dog parks.
