The Firestone Police Department is pleased to announce Commander Heidi Walts graduated from the Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP) and Commander James Stroud graduated from the School of Police Sta and Command (SPSC) at Northwestern University. SMIP is a three-week leadership program hosted by the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) at Boston University, and the curriculum addresses topics including political management, organizational strategy, performance management, organizational change, leadership, managerial problem-solving, strategy implementation, leadership communications, career planning, negotiation, the budgeting process, critical incident response, media relations, oicer wellness, and new policing strategies and innovations. The curriculum for SMIP is a fast-paced, reading-intensive program that requires a considerable commitment in class and aer class through independent and group study assignments. Commander Walts had the opportunity to learn from professors from prestigious institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University. The School of Police Sta and Command provides upper-level college instruction in a total of twenty-seven core blocks of instruction and additional optional blocks during each session. The major topics of study include: Leadership, Human Resources, Employee Relations, Organizational Behavior, Applied Statistics, Planning and Policy Development, Budgeting and Resource Allocation. Each student is academically challenged through written examinations, projects, presentations, and quizzes in addition to a sta study paper that are all required parts of the curriculum. The Firestone Police Department is committed to having the most professional and trained Command Sta, and the Senior Management Institute for Police and School of Police Sta and Command continues to move this police department closer to accomplishing that goal. We want to commend and congratulate Commander Walts and Commander Stroud for their commitment to continuing education and completing their respective programs. Well done!
