HomeMy WebLinkAboutWest Nile Virus Positive Mosquitoes Detected in Weld County - 7/24/2026West Nile Virus-Positive Mosquitoes Detected in Weld County Mosquitoes collected in Weld County have tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV). As part of its mosquito surveillance program, a contractor for the Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment monitors mosquito traps weekly in three areas of the county: Zone 1: Greeley, Evans, Kersey, and La Salle Zone 2: Johnstown, Milliken, and Platteville Zone 3: Firestone, Dacono, and Fort Lupton Mosquitoes collected in Zone 2 have tested positive for WNV. At this time, there are no reported human cases of West Nile virus in Weld County. The Town of Firestone is located in Zone 3, where no WNV-positive mosquitoes have been detected to date. However, officials with the Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment anticipate that positive mosquito activity may increase as the mosquito season continues through the hotter months of July and August. Residents are encouraged to take simple precautions to reduce their risk of mosquito bites and help prevent the spread of West Nile virus: DRAIN standing water around your home at least once a week. Be sure to empty water from tires, cans, flowerpots, clogged rain gutters, rain barrels, toys, birdbaths, and other containers that collect water. DUSK and DAWN are when mosquitoes are most active. Limit outdoor activities during these times when possible, or take extra precautions to avoid mosquito bites. DEET is an effective ingredient in mosquito repellents. Repellents containing picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or para-menthane-diol are also effective. Always follow the product label instructions. DRESS in long sleeves, long pants, and a hat when spending time outdoors in areas where mosquitoes are present. To help reduce mosquito populations, the Town of Firestone has contracted with Vector Disease Control International (VDCI) to provide mosquito management services throughout the 2026 season. Services include larval water treatments, adult mosquito surveillance and trapping, and targeted fogging when necessary. VDCI provides the Town with weekly mosquito trap results, which are available online at www.firestoneco.gov/mosquitocontrol.
