The 2020-2050 Water Action Plan serves as the blueprint to give Firestone control of our water destiny, costs, and system to better serve the community. One of the major projects identified in the plan is the ability to increase capacity by locally building the St. Vrain Water Treatment Plant (SVWTP). The SVWTP broke ground in July 2020. In June of 2023, the SVWTP received authorization from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) to deliver treated water to customers. The SVWTP can produce up 1.5 Million Gallons of water per day (MGD) and is designed to be expanded to 5.0 MGD. The state-of-the-art treatment process is in three stages; 1) Flocculation/Sedimentation, 2) Ultra-Filtration Membranes, and then 3) Reverse Osmosis Membranes. The Town of Firestone is currently the only customer of the SVWTP and has completed the infrastructure to take delivery of the treated water from the new Treatment Plant. The water plant's initial operating capacity is a minimum production rate while new land development projects are constructed and come online. The infrastructure that has been built, which allows for points of connection to the SVWTP, are in the two lower pressure zones Firestone operates, generally being described as all of Firestone north of Sable Avenue and south of the St Vrain River. Water purchased by the Town of Firestone from the SVWTP is not in place of water purchased from Central Weld County Water District (CWCWD) but is in addition to the water purchased from them. The new water supply is intended to meet the growth demands that CWCWD system cannot. For 2023, the SVWTP will produce 65,000 gallons of water per day for delivery to the Town of Firestone. While demands in Firestone's distribution change seasonally, the Spring demand in the zones served by the SVWTP are a combined average of 862,000 gallons per day. The SVWTP will supply about 7.5% of that demand, while the remainder will still be supplied by purchases from CWCWD. The Town of Firestone is planning to start taking delivery of treated water from the SVWTP the week of June 19. Delivery will be for a few hours each weekday during the middle of the day.
